CARMEL, N.Y. -- Fighting back tears, Tommy Sullivan, Jr. stands by as the urns carrying the remains of his entire family - his father, mother and two teen sisters - are placed into a hearse.

“It’s hard to see a friend go through a struggle like that. I just hope Tom knows we’re here for him,” said Eric Dinome.

The 20-year-old was the lone survivor of the tragic fire last week. In an outpouring of support, hundreds including relatives, friends, law enforcement and complete strangers attend the funeral in Carmel to pay their final respects.

“So many people came out to pay tribute. It was just really touching to see,” said family friend Liz Sterling.

“The whole town was devastated. It was just unbelievable,” added Tom Broderick.

The fire tore through the family’s Wyndham Lane home on Tuesday, killing Larchmont Police Captain Thomas Sullivan, his wife, Donna, their 17-year-old daughter, Meaghan, and 13-year-old daughter, Mairead.

“I just remember seeing them around and the younger girl always had the biggest smile on her face,” said Lisa Broderick.

The procession began with bagpipers, followed by a long line of uniformed officers standing at attention as the family walked into the St. James the Apostle Church. Inside, an emotional ceremony, filled with heartfelt reflections from those who knew the Sullivan family best.

“There was a lot of love in the room. There was certainly a lot of respect for the family for what they’re going through,” said Putnam County Executive and family friend MaryEllen Odell.

Several funds have been set up to help Tommy Sullivan, Jr. As of now, the cause of the fire is undetermined.
