TROY, N.Y. -- A report of possible drug activity in Troy leads police to a 15-year-old boy who they said was carrying a fully loaded handgun.
Patrol units were dispatched Friday morning to Sixth Avenue where they saw four males smoking an unknown substance, which was later identified as marijuana. The four were ordered to the wall and a when asked about weapons, the 15-year-old admitted he had a gun in his waistband. Police said the weapon was a semi-automatic handgun with live rounds and a high capacity magazine.
Captain John Cooney said, "The officers in another situation at another time or another place may have had to confront that 15-year-old under totally different circumstances, which we all know, if the 15-year-old without knowledge of the implications of his actions displayed the gun, this could've been very tragic."
The 15-year-old and a 14-year-old were referred to Rensselaer County Probation.
Terrence Battiste, 24, and Quayvon Canty, 22, were arrested and charged with endangering the welfare of a child, possession of marijuana, and trespass.
