MILTON, N.Y. -- Fire destroys a home in Milton on Monday afternoon.
Firefighters were called to a home on Route 29. Five people live there, and all of them are members of the Navy, who work at a nearby training facility. Four were home at the time, and one had to jump out a window to escape the flames.
Firefighters faced some problems from the lack of fire hydrants in the area.
Joe Spofford, the Milton Fire Department Assistant Chief said, “We had to call tankers in, we had five other fire departments here helping us. The fire was advanced to the stage where we didn't want to go inside because it was too dangerous, so it turned into surround and drown."
No one was injured in the fire. Fire officials said the building was too dangerous to enter afterwards, and demolition equipment was called in to tear it down.
