ALBANY, N.Y. -- A vote will be held on legislation to ban fracking in Albany during tonight's Common Council meeting.

Councilman Dominick Calsolaro re-introduced the measure in in February, after it was vetoed by Mayor Jerry Jennings last year.

Jennings said it could expose the city to lawsuits from the gas industry, but new support for the bill could mean they have enough votes to pass the measure again and overturn a veto.

"It is not a local issue," said Mayor Jennings. "It is an issue the state has to deal with, the federal government. They are the professionals, and I'm not going to compromise taxpayers' dollars if we end up in a lawsuit because our council feels it is the right thing to do."

If passed, Albany would be the 95th municipality in New York to enact a ban on fracking.
