SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. -- Saratoga Springs officials face a new obstacle in their quest to make last call in the city earlier.

The State Liquor Authority now says that the law to change last call to 3 a.m. would have to be county-wide. City and county leaders say it boils down to a public safety and financial issue, trying to find a way to stop bad behavior without hurting business.

"We've been having a lot of problems with the crowds. We've been having a lot of problems with the behavior of the people in those crowds. Especially in the warm weather months, it gets out of control," said Saratoga Springs Public Safety Commissioner Chris Mathiesen.

"I'd want to hear Saratoga Springs’ view directly, but I also want to hear from the private sector and the businesses that our involved. This could negatively affect some businesses, not necessarily in Clifton Park, but in other parts of the county," said Clifton Park Town Supervisor Phil Barrett.

Some bar owners say the change would cause a significant drop in sales tax revenue and fears bars in other areas will steal their business. They also say it would lead to an increase in house parties, causing troublemakers and the police force to be spread throughout the city.
