MENANDS, N.Y. -- The Mohawk Hudson Humane Society received a $30,000 grant to help spay and neuter animals in the Capital Region.

The funding comes from the State’s Animal Population Control Fund, which is administered by the ASPCA. The money will be used to help nearly 500 cats and more then 100 dogs, and help the area prevent thousands of unwanted animal births and strays.

The Humane Society said cat owners who qualify can get the surgery for $30 and pit bull owners can pay a fee of just $1.00.

Half of the grant will be used for the Society's Feline Fix program and the other half will be put towards the "Buck a Bull" program dedicated to sterilizing pit bull type of dogs.

Anyone interested in the program can call the Humane Society for more details.
