Sources say Canestrari won’t seek another term

CAPITAL REGION, N.Y. -- Democratic Party sources have confirmed to YNN that Assembly Majority Leader Ron Canestrari plans to announce Tuesday he won't seek another term in office.

Canestrari, 69, is holding a press conference Tuesday morning at 11 where he's expected to confirm the news.

Canestrari, whose district represents parts of Albany, Rensselaer and Saratoga counties, has been Assembly Majority Leader since 2007.

Before being elected to the Assembly, Canestrari served as mayor of his hometown of Cohoes.

His retirement makes him the third Capital Region Democrat in the Assembly to announce their plans to retire. Assemblyman Bob Reilly announced he would not seek a new term, followed later by Assemblyman Jack McEneny’s announcement that he would retire.

Canestrari did receive the Albany County Democrats’ endorsement to run for another term at their convention in late March, though the local party’s blessing could easily be switched to another candidate.
