WAWARSING, N.Y. -- A fire that started Saturday afternoon is still burning in the Town of Wawarsing. It charred acres worth of land and consumed an Ulster County landmark.

Police believe someone intentionally started a fire and it quickly grew after winds sweeped through the area. There is not much left of the historic Tamarack Lodge. It was built in the 1900's.

The fire cross over Route 52 and burned through some bungalows. 18 people are left without a home now. In total, 50 acres were destroyed.

Charles Mutz, the Ulster County Chief Fire Coordinator said, “We did lose multiple structures unfortunately, but really the issue we had was we could not control that fire. It was just too fast moving and large.”

Sixty-three fire companies from four counties assisted in trying to control the fire. One firefighter was sent to the hospital for smoke inhalation, others experienced minor injuries.

The fire is expected to continue smoldering into Monday.
