ALBANY, N.Y. -- Capital Hills at Albany Golf Course opened March 17th, two weeks earlier than it ever has. That's a big boost for business after last year's shortened season.

"Last year was one of the worst years we ever could have had," said head golf professional Steve Vatter. "The weather was horrible last year. We lost a lot of days where we were just closed."

As a municipal course - Capital Hills relies on daily fees rather than membership dues, so staying open is crucial.

"It's all weather," Vatter said. "People want to play golf but when the weather doesn't allow them to, there's nothing you can do. It's a lot like the ski industry."

Employees here tell us the course is extremely busy with golfers playing about 250 rounds this first Saturday in April. That's the same type of numbers they see on July 4th.

"Can't beat it. Beautiful day. Very comfortable out there and the course is in great shape," said Ed Kampf after finishing his round. "This course gets great support. When we came today we had about a 45 minute wait. So everybody was out today golfing."

"It's what I've been thinking about all winter. It's just great to be out here," Don Smith said after walking off the 18th green. "This course happens to be a beautiful course. It's a great municipal course so I don't think you can do much better around here."

The course may not do better business-wise either, if this great weather continues.

"If it stays normal, average summer, we could probably have our best year," Vatter said. "That's not out of the question."

Employees and golfers say there's definitely no guarantee Mother Nature will keep cooperating, but they'll take advantage while they can.
