BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Western New York State Senator Mark Grisanti introduces five bills he said will protect the environment, should New York decide to allow high volume hydraulic fracturing.

Grisanti made the announcement at a press conference in Buffalo yesterday. Under his legislation, publicly-owned treatment facilities would be prohibited from accepting wastewater associated with fracking.

The legislation would create an oil and gas waste tracking system and would strengthen a notification system should there be an unauthorized discharge of wastewater.

Grisanti said his bills go further than the proposals in the Supplemental Generic Environmental Impact Statement currently before the DEC.

Grisanti said, “These bills that I'm going on right now are what I seem to be as something that is not addressed or a flaw with regards to the SGEIS report."

Grisanti said the bills will be introduced in committee when lawmakers return in mid-April.

The DEC has not set a timetable for its decision.
