SCHODACK, N.Y. -- Crews responded to a large fire Tuesday morning at Excelsior Alternative Fuel in Schodack. The business makes bio-fuel bricks and pallets for burning.
Between 12 and 14 companies from Rensselaer and Columbia counties were on the scene.
Fire officials said there were problems getting a steady water supply to the location so they had to shuttle it in. And due to the nature of the company, it made the situation more dangerous.
"Well, it's a heavy fire condition, heavy fire load. I mean, the entire building is loaded with wooden pallets, wooden chips, so everything in there is combustible," said South Schodack Fire Chief Gary Roberts.
The smoke was even so thick at points that it reduced visibility on the westbound side of the Berkshire Spur.
There were no reported injuries and no word yet on a cause.
