KINGSTON, N.Y. -- State Police said an off duty Town of Ulster police officer was drunk when he crashed his car late last year and died.

Troopers finished their investigation into the death of Officer Travis Nissen. Troopers said Nissen was off duty and driving to his home in Shokan back in December when he lost control of his car and crashed it into a utility pole on Route 28 in the town of Olive.

According to State Police, Nissen had a blood alcohol level of .18, more than twice the legal limit. Troopers said fatigue and inattention may have played a role in the crash too.

Nissen was hired in 2006 and regarded as a very respected resource officer at M. Clifford Miller School in Kingston.

Nissen was buried with honors.
