PITTSFIELD, Mass. -- A local hospital gets top honor for having one of the best emergency rooms in the nation.

Pittsfield's Berkshire Medical Center scored within the top five percent nationwide for emergency medicine.

The finding comes from a report by Health Grades, a health care rating company.

Records from more than seven million hospitals were studied from 2008 to 2010. BMC administrators say the award is a sign of hard work.

BMC Emergency Department Chairman Dr. Ronald Hayden said, "We see all gamut. It's important to be at the top of your game for the most critically ill patients because if you're not at the top of your game for those folks, they're the ones that won't do well."

Emergency Services Executive Director Roberta Gale said, "A very well-trained staff in all areas of health care that recognize emergent patients and how important it is to get them to the hospital."

BMC is one of 263 hospitals in the nation to score within the top five percent. It shares that status with two other hospitals in the Bay State.
