SARATOGA COUNTY, N.Y. -- "They thought there was 60 to 65 cats in the trailer and turned out there were 135," said Saratoga County Animal Shelter Supervisor Dan Butler.
Yes, 135 cats once tucked inside one woman's D & R Village Trailer Park home, are now at the Saratoga County Animal Shelter.
"It's the most we've received in the 34 years since I've been here at one time," said Butler. "You know, we usually get this in a month maybe, but we had these all in one day."
Butler said State Police found them Monday packed eight to 10 per dirty crate, but sources say there doesn't appear to be enough evidence to assign charges for animal cruelty to the unnamed owner.
"We have 40 that are ready to be spayed and neutered, 20 of which will be done tonight and then tomorrow night, we'll do the others," said Butler. "I have 38 in a quarantine and a lot of moms with baby kittens.”
Managers here weren't free to say much, but they did say it's a shame for those cats and that normally there are only allowed three animals per trailer.
"Glad that if it had to happen it happened this time of the year our population at the shelter is low," said Butler. "We're probably down to about 60 or 70. I think our population at the shelter is 171."
So as police continue their investigation and the cats purr their way to health, the shelter advertises adoption.
"That's what we really need," said Butler. "We need everybody to come. We're probably going to offer a half way decent adoption price, but hopefully do something to help them get all homes basically."
