SCHENECTADY, N.Y. -- Parents in Schenectady are asking for support to keep the city's last Catholic school from closing.

Parents and parishioners have created a letter of support to save Saint Johns the Evangelist School.

Parents said they are receiving mixed reactions from people in the community. Some believe St. Johns is a lost cause; others are showing positive support to save the school. St. Johns told parents on Monday that the school would be closing it's doors for good in June due to financial problems. Parents said the letter was created to pull people together in faith to save the school.

Glenna Ryan, parent and parishioner said, “They teach our children to be good citizens the academics are unmatched out there. We're creating our future here and the school should stay open because of it."

Alexandra Ryan, a former student said, “This school was like a big family to me it got me ready for middle school and I don’t think any school would have done as good a job as they did."

Parents said had they had been told sooner that the school would be closed, they would've already been fighting to keep it open. Still the school's current enrollment is 84 students which is about half what it was six years ago.
