BETHLEHEM, N.Y. -- A member of the New York National Guard was arrested after police said he went door to door in Colonie and Bethlehem, soliciting donations to support U.S. troops but using the money for himself.

Robert Conde, 20, of Albany is charged with scheming to defraud, a felony, as well as misdemeanors of petit larceny, fraudulent accosting, official misconduct, and receiving unlawful gratuities.

According to Bethlehem police, Conde went to homes in his military uniform and collected funds in the form of cash and checks. He said the money was for U.S. troops, but police said he kept the money for himself.

Bethlehem police said they've investigated six complaints so far. It's not known at this point how much money he collected.

Conde was arraigned in Bethlehem Town Court and sent to the Albany County Correctional Facility on $35,000 bail.
