NEWBURGH -- Hundreds of people showed up for Michael Lambhard's funeral, including the Mayor of Newburgh. Lembhard was buried Monday, days after being shot and killed by Newburgh Police.

Family and friends of Michael Lembhard found themselves wrestling with anger upset over the 22-year-old's death. Services held Monday for the father of two.

I grew up with this mother and for me to see that she lost a child., I feel it. It’s hard, it’s heartfelt," said family-friend Wilbert Pitman.

Lembhard died Wednesday in Newburgh. He was a wanted man and had a warrant out for his arrest. Police says officers shot Lembhard after he came at them with a knife.

The incident sparked outrage in the community. Folks we spoke with feel police used excessive and could have avoided this killing.

"They most definitely didn’t need to do this,. There’s other ways of subduing an individual. Whether it’s you using a tasar gun, or may it be a billy club. There’s four officers against one," said Pitman.

The police department is standing by officers' actions. The City council is calling on the Governor to investigate the incident.

The attorney representing Lemdhard's family says he too wants a thorough review and adds he's not rushing to court just yet to filed a wrongly death suit.

"These incidents are significant because they further erose the confidence people have in the police agency and the cooraporation relationship between the community and the polcie," said attorney Michael Sussman.

The officers are on administrative leave. The PBA union representing the officers were supposed to hold a press conference Monday to discuss the shooting. That was cancelled at the last minute.
