NEWBURGH, N.Y. -- Tensions are high in a Newburgh Community after a deadly shooting.

Michael Lembhard, 22, was shot and killed by police officers at a home on Liberty street.
Police said four members of the anti-crime unit spotted Lembhard on Wednesday night. He had been wanted for larceny, resisting arrest, criminal mischief and disorderly conduct.

Police said he ran into his sister's home, grabbed a kitchen knife and threatened to kill himself. They said he then charged at officers. Four officers were involved and two opened fire

However, family members have a different account for what happened.

A news conference Friday morning between city officials and community members quickly escalated into a heated confrontation as city leaders tried to provide an explanation for the shooting.

The district attorney said the shooting is under investigation.

DA Frank Phillips said, “Determine whether or not the actions of the officers were justified. If not, it warrants criminal charges. Not going to determine that today. A grand jury will hear all evidence and will determine."

The officers involved are on administrative leave while that evidence is being reviewed, which is standard procedure. An autopsy is being conducted on Lembhard with results expected early next week.
