NEWBURGH, N.Y. -- It was an emotional scene inside City Hall in Newburgh, as the community looked for answers after a police-involved fatal shooting Wednesday night.
Several community members turned out for what was supposed to be a news conference held by city leaders to release more details about the shooting. Instead, it turned into more of a free-for-all, as family and friends of Michael Lembhard shouted at the police chief, the county district attorney, and the city's mayor.
Police said four members of the anti-crime unit spotted Lembhard on Wednesday night. The chief said he was wanted for larceny, resisting arrest, criminal mischief and disorderly conduct. Police said Lembhard ran into his sister's home, grabbed a kitchen knife and threatened to kill himself. They said he then charged at officers.
Two of the officers opened fire, killing Lembhard.
Several people attending the news conference began shouting at the officials, demanding an investigation by a special prosecutor.
District Attorney Frank Phillips said, "Determine whether or not the actions of the officers were justified. If not, it warrants criminal charges. Not going to determine that today. A grand jury will hear all evidence and will determine."
The officers are currently on administrative leave while the evidence is being reviewed, which is standard procedure.
