GLENS FALLS, N.Y. -- "He held her like a little porcelain doll, you know, like she was something really special. So, this just totally was like, this doesn't add up in my head," said Darlene Wood, who lives next door to David Cook. Wood said she has seen him interact with the infant he was arrested for injuring.

Glens Falls police said 33-year-old Cook was watching the 7-week old baby when she was both sexually and physically abused. The baby's mother was not home at the time.

"When it's right next door and you've talked with that person, it sends chills, you know, because you don't understand that you didn't see something or know something," explained Wood.

Police said they found out something was wrong on Sunday.

"We received a complaint that the child, a 7-week old child, was taken to Glens Falls Hospital with some serious injuries," said Glens Falls Police Captain Robert Ash.

The newborn baby was airlifted from Glens Falls Hospital to Albany Medical Center where she's listed in critical but stable condition.

"In less than a month, we've had two small children injured in Warren County. And the very young, the very old are your most vulnerable population. So it's troubling when you see the magnitude. One resulted in death, and I'm hopeful that this child can survive," said Warren County District Attorney Kate Hogan.

Cook was arrested Sunday night and is charged with two counts of second-degree aggravated sexual abuse and one count of second-degree assault. He's in the Warren County Jail and Hogan said an order of protection was issued against him.

Police said the investigation is ongoing.
