ULSTER COUNTY, N.Y. -- A SUNY New Paltz student is facing several felony charges after police said he held a couple students hostage with a sword. University officers responded to a call at Deyo Hall early Tuesday morning.

The police chief said Isaac Doughty, 18, was inside his room with two other students. The chief said he believes he was armed with a small martial arts sword.

Doughty is charged with kidnapping, assault, and possession of a weapon.

The SUNY New Paltz police chief said the student was not in a "normal mental state" and was taken to the hospital. The chief also said that some responding officers were treated for minor injuries.
