Residents at a senior home in Cohoes are on edge as police try to figure out how a suspect in a deadly attack got into their building. Our Lori Chung has more on what officials are doing to ease fears there.

COHOES, N.Y. -- "Reassure them that we are here for them and just to make them feel a little more comfortable, if that’s possible,” said Cohoes Police Chief Bill Heslin who, along with and mayor John McDonald, prepare to speak to residents at the Ogden Mill senior apartment complex.

Many residents there are fearful after John Siakala, 67, was killed by an intruder.

"Is it safe to still live here? How could he have gotten in the building? What can we do better to protect ourselves?" asked McDonald.

Those are the questions officials say have been pouring in after Mark Richardson, 53, allegedly went door to door looking for someone to rob before Siakala opened the door to a deadly beating. Police are still trying to figure out how Richardson got into the building as they meet with residents and building management. One of concerns here is the front door that closes slowly, potentially giving strangers an opportunity to enter.

"We come over here frequently during the year and talk to the seniors, and a lot of time it’s about security and we have to keep reinforcing that," said Heslin.

Though it's still unclear whether there was any security lapse here, one thing officials want residents to take away from this meeting is to be vigilant.

"We tell people all the time 'don’t let anybody you don’t know into your home' and unfortunately, sometimes people do," said Heslin.

Richardson is also accused of assaulting another woman in the building before fleeing the scene. He's charged with robbery and assault, but given the circumstances, more charges are expected.
