COLONIE, N.Y. -- The Colonie landfill will be run by a privately-owned waste management facility beginning on Monday.
The Colonie Town Board voted to privatize the town landfill back in July. A California-based company gave the town $23 million up front for agreeing to the plan.
The town, however, will still own the landfill, and the town engineer will still be on staff to monitor the operation.
Town Supervisor Paula Mahan said the plan will bring $100 million to Colonie over the next 25 years. Critics said the move is a short-term solution and doesn't address larger financial issues.
