ALBANY COUNTY, N.Y. -- The Colonie Landfill will now be run by privately owned waste management facility.

The Colonie Town Board voted to privatize the town landfill in July.

A California based company will now run the landfill. They gave the town $23 million up front for agreeing to the plan.

The town however will still own the landfill, and the town engineer will still be on staff to monitor the operation.

Town Supervisor Paula Mahan said the plan will bring $100 million to Colonie over the next 25 years.

Critics said the move is a short term solution.
