The Hudson Valley SPCA is getting a major facelift thanks to the face of Orange County Choppers. The man known as Paulie Sr. is helping the shelter in more ways than one. YNN's Elaina Athans has more.

NEW WINDSOR, N.Y. -- He can built beautifully ornate motorcycles and has competed on “Celebrity Apprentice,” but Paulie Teutul Sr. is spending a lot of time these days with drills, hammers and saws, volunteering at the Hudson Valley SPCA. He's offering not just his time, but also money, to give the shelter a makeover.

"I’m really an animal lover and I’ve been all my life," said Paul Teutul Sr.

Teutul is doing some the construction himself. There's a new roof, fencing and lobby, among other things.

"I’m a pretty busy guy, but I get a lot of time out of my day to participate in here because self supporting foundation," said Teutul.

In a couple months time, Teutul has invested tens of thousands of dollars into this shelter and he says the work is far from over.

"It really, really has been like a guardian angel," said Hudson Valley SPCA President Joanie Kay.

These upgrades and a situation where there's actually a cash flow are a far cry from where the SPCA was last September. The shelter was on the verge of closing. Donations dried up and bills were mounting. The SPCA credits Teutul as one of the people who help save the shelter.

"He’s here because he wants to be here and it’s important for us to stay open," said Kay.

The SPCA is financially doing much better now, but there is still a need for people to give their time and volunteer, just like Teutul is doing.

“I think that more people need to be involved. It can't be a one man show here," said Teutul.
