SCHENECTADY, N.Y. -- Union's Jeremy Welsh is headed to the pros.

The junior forward signed an entry level NHL contract with the Carolina Hurricanes on Thursday night. He will join the Hurricanes Saturday night for the team's final game of the season against the Florida Panthers.

The director of hockey operations for the Carolina Hurricanes said Welsh has shown character and leadership at the college level, in addition to scoring goals.

Welsh said he's eager to learn from successful hockey players he's looked up to.

"I feel for the development of being a hockey player, it was time to move on, take the next challenge," Welsh said. "I'm going to get my education by the end of the summer so I have that taken care of, and just time to move on, and keep developing kind of thing."

The 23-year-old scored 27 goals and 17 assists in 40 games this season. He broke the school single season goals record and ranked first on the team and fourth in the NCAA in goals scored.

Welsh and the Dutchmen lost to Ferris State in the Frozen Four tournament Thursday night in Tampa.
