NEW YORK, N.Y. -- The trial of former state Senator Pedro Espada Jr. gets underway today with jury selection in New York City.
He and his son are accused of embezzling more than half a million dollars from their federally-funded Soundview Health Clinic in the Bronx. They're also accused of lying about their incomes and profits.
The investigation into Espada's finances was led by then-Attorney General Andrew Cuomo.
"The truth is that we're completely innocent," Espada Jr. told reporters outside the courtroom. "The truth is that we're very supported by the community throughout New York City and New York State. They know our good work for 30 years. As I said, we have a diverse and very just jury waiting to hear the truth."
Espada Jr. founded Soundview over three decades ago. However, since the indictment, the clinics have struggled to stay open.
