The Capital Holiday Lights in Washington Park turns 16 and that Sweet 16 celebration is the focus of this year's light show. Monday evening, city leaders and organizers flipped the switch on the lights. Innae Park has more.
ALBANY, N.Y. -- The lights are beaming and so are kids' faces with the start of Price Chopper Capital Holiday Lights in the Park.
Executive Director of the Albany Police Athletic League (PAL), Lenny Ricchiuti, said, “It's become a holiday tradition for so many families and we're just pleased and privileged to be a part of that.”
With the title, "A Sweet 16 Celebration," the annual event is becoming a mainstay in the Capital District.
Mayor Jerry Jennings said, “People get an opportunity to come to our great capital, see our beautiful park, really, really decorated second to none and it's a great experience.”
The Albany Police Athletic League benefits from it. They expect another banner year. That's even following a shocking vandalism last year when graffiti was sprayed on displays, lights cut and holiday spirit at an all-time low.
“The thousands of kids that we serve were victims of a tragedy,” said Ricchiuti. “And the Capital Region came together. We had volunteers from National Grid and the privates and different folks came out on Christmas Eve to make sure the lights were up and ready that evening again.”
With such a strong showing of support from the community, PAL wants to keep paying it forward. In fact, they've set aside three nights to support other non-profits: The Wounded Warrior Project, the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society and local food banks in New York.
Ricchiuti said, “We think part of our mission is to obviously help others be successful as well.”
A display that will shine beyond the season.
