Throughout the year, clubs across the country hold “Meet the Breed” events to give the public an opportunity to see some of the breeds we watch during nationally televised dog shows. You can get up close and personal with a variety of breeds, including a few that are new to the AKC registry.

An Italian Mastiff, known as the Cane Corso, is a breed that was only recently recognized and made eligible to compete in the working group by the American Kennel Club in 2010. Known for centuries in Italy as a loyal protector of his people and their property, the breed’s name comes from the Latin word for “guardian.” They can also be docile and affectionate with their own family, but strangers should use caution. These intelligent dogs are very trainable, but enthusiastic.

It’s also important to note that you should never tease a Cane Corso or teach them to play rough. You’re also advised to never leave children alone with any dog, because all dogs can bite. When a large dog starts to play rough, it’s usually the human who gets hurt.

One Cane Corso, Fig, is quite a mellow example of the breed. His pet parents have gone to great lengths to socialize him properly. That is true with any dog, large or small: Socialization is key.
