Child Wellness: Synthetic marijuana

By: Marcie Fraser

It’s sometimes called Purple Sky or K2 Spice. Synthetic marijuana is often sold as incense, and on the back of the package it says ‘not for human consumption’ and ‘shouldn't be inhaled.’ But as Marcie Fraser reports, that’s not stopping some kids from using it.

Synthetic marijuana is green vegetation that is laced with several chemicals. The DEA is working hard with Congress to outlaw the product. It's marketed as an incense, and parents are easily fooled into thinking it's just that.

It's sold at head shops, but most kids are getting it off the Internet. Because it is legal, more kids are apt to try it. Officials say people start out smoking marijuana and K2 Spice, which then can be a stepping stone for more addictive drugs like heroin and cocaine.

"I say to parents, you need to be aware of what you children are doing, what their issues they may be and often times what we have found from experience, drug use in of itself, is not the problem, it's a symptoms of another problem. If parents are involved with their children, they are in a better able to understand if some sort intervention is needed," said Major Wayne Olson, NYS Narcotics Enforcement Team.
