SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. -- Saratoga may be known as "The Summer Place to Be," but for some people, it pays to leave.

"The price on the home was $6,500 a week and I pretty much get that, sometimes more," said Kim Patterson. "That's certainly an added bonus. It pays for our vacation if nothing else."

Patterson is renting her home for a few weeks during track season, while her family vacations elsewhere.

"We did it the past two summers, and it was perfect," she said. "We were out of town and people benefitted from our home, and it was a win-win situation for everybody."

Track rentals are big business in Saratoga Springs as owners, trainers, jockeys and patrons come to town for the 40-day meet. A wide variety of rentals can be found - costing thousands of dollars a week, and even tens of thousands for the whole meet.

"You get a lot of the same people coming back year after year," said Neal Estano, a realtor at Keller Williams in Saratoga Springs. "Often times they rent the same places or they may change locations. But it's fairly busy and it's definitely a big part of the real estate picture."

"I know there are many many people, hundreds and hundreds of people in Saratoga who do it," Patterson said. "I'm assuming most of the people have had the same positive experience that I've had which causes us to want to do it again next year."

The 2012 Saratoga meet runs from July 20 to September 3.
