Several people are spending Sunday night in a hotel after a fire in a Clifton Park apartment complex. And that wasn't the only site of flames in Saratoga County this weekend. YNN's Beth Croughan reports.

CLIFTON PARK, N.Y. -- "My husband opened the door. All he sees is flames and he heard the crackling," described Gia Mertzlufft. After being woken up to commotion and the sound of smoke alarms just before four Sunday morning, Mertzlufft said she grabbed her two young children. The family of four escaped an early-morning apartment fire at the Squire Park.

Firefighters said it started on the second-floor. They were able to stop it from spreading downstairs, but Mertzlufft said there was still damage to her family's first-floor apartment. "There's like five inches of water in there, there's smoke," she explained.

The Property Manager at Squire Park said eight apartments are damaged but no one is injured. The Clifton Park Fire Chief believes about 20 people in total are now displaced.

After battling those flames, Saratoga County firefighters were called to control another fire at a home in nearby Halfmoon.

"Because of the initial fire over in Clifton Park, there were a lot of departments in the general area, either returning to their stations or just getting back to their stations. So, we had a lot of manpower at both fires," explained John D'Alessandro, the Public Information Officer for the Halfmoon Fire Department.

By Sunday afternoon the fires had been extinguished; a much different scene for Mertzlufft than it was in the morning.

Surrounded by family, she said they'll try to celebrate the holiday and work to figure it out.

Both of the fires are still being investigated.

Along with the Red Cross, property management is working with displaced residents.

The Squire Park Property Manager said temporary hotel accommodations are being made until the tenants can be moved to nearby apartments.
