ALBANY, N.Y. -- Bravery, courage and self sacrifice often go along with being a hero. This weekend two local war veterans were honored for their heroic efforts during battle.

Grace and Holy Innocents Church in Albany held their second annual 'War heroes weekend remembrance service' on Sunday. The service honored Clifton Park native and U.S Marine Captain John McKenna, as well as Sgt. Henry Lincoln Johnson, a World War I hero. McKenna was killed in Iraq in 2006 while trying to save one of his men.

His father spoke at the ceremony, and said his son's accomplishments reflected his good character, caring nature and desire to help others.

John McKenna, Captain McKenna’s father said, “He earned many titles, as a humanitarian."

Sgt. Johnson was from Albany. While on duty in France in 1918, Johnson and a fellow soldier were attacked by Germans. Johnson singlehandedly fought off the Germans with only a knife and, then rescued his fellow soldier as he was being taken prisoner.
