ALBANY, N.Y. -- Albany residents offered their thoughts on the nomination of Steven Krokoff for police chief. At a public meeting, more than a dozen people addressed the public safety committee advocating for change.

Support for Krokoff seemed lukewarm at the first of two public meetings this summer.

The mayor's pick has been the city's acting police chief and has been tapped to take the position permanently after the retirement of former chief James Tuffey.

Residents' concerns were not if he would make a good chief but rather what he should do to make Albany a safer place.

"Will there be a place common location where complains will be heard and followed up?" asked Albany resident Andres Rivera.

"How he is going to engage, energize interests and bring the community in. How is he going to create better community relations and better community interests in police actions in their community," said Albany resident Marlon Anderson.

Krokoff was not at the meeting, issuing a statement saying he did not want his presence to influence the dialogue. He will be at the July 12th meeting to stand before the public safety committee.

City council has until early August to confirm Krokoff.
