LATHAM, N.Y. -- A new retirement community will soon be available in Latham.

A groundbreaking ceremony was held Friday for the new Shaker Pointe community. The senior housing facility will offer 198 single residences for people 55 and older. It will operate as a not-for-profit.

The Sisters of St. Joseph first proposed the project for the 30 acre site in early 2008, saying the development is designed to respond to a need for senior housing with medical and other services.

"One of the things I think for anyone of us that is retiring, we don't want to lose our neighborhoods, we don't want to lose our homes, we don't want to lose having contact with others, so I think that's the real gift of Shaker Pointe," said Sister Kay Ryan.

The community will include a 24-hour staff, concierge service, daily transportation, housekeeping service and indoor and outdoor maintenance.
